“The ice cream is one of the key symbols of the traditional British seaside holiday, so I have made it a central theme in my recent work. The colours, textures and melting quality of a fresh ice cream is particularly exciting to capture in paint, although I am equally attracted to the solid, static plastic ice creams used to advertise ice cream parlours by the seaside, as well as the use of ice creams in poster advertising. These different inspirations require a different approach and painting technique. I often use a palette knife to recreate the lush swirls and texture of a real ice cream, whereas detailed draughtsmanship and brush work is needed to replicate poster advertising or the solidity of a plastic advertising cone...”

HANGING CONE

“This man-made ice cream cone was designed to attract customers to one of the ice cream parlours on Beach Road, Hemsby. It is still in place today, and unlike a real ice cream, will never melt or be eaten...”

On show now at Crome Gallery, 33 Elm Hilll, Norwich.

GLOWING CONE

“Lit from inside, this man-made piece of advertising has a glowing presence that pulls in customers as they walk along Marine Parade, Great Yarmouth. Its perfect swirls of ice cream and vibrant patterned cone put everyone in the mood for a 99...”

99

“Ice creams come in all colours and shapes, but simplicity often works best and there is nothing more classic than a 99. It’s a true icon of the British seaside...”

LOVE POTION

“Advertising changes all the time. New posters come and go on the cafes and ice cream parlours on Great Yarmouth seafront, as the ice cream companies bring out new flavours and limited edition versions of our favourite ice creams. So, have you tried Cornetto Love Potion?”
